Continuity and Change in World Politics: Competing Perspectives
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (02 July, 1996)
Author: Barry B. Hughes
Average review score:

Anyone got a thumb to spare? This book gets three thumbs up!
I was first introduced to this book as a debater, and it has since become our team's bible. Hughes succeeds in pointing us to broad trends in the development of international relations while avoiding making sweeping generalisations reminiscent of The Clash of Civilisations by Samuel Huntington.

His analysis of the increasing dominance of non-state actors is exceedingly well-written and well-supported with evidence. In addition, he introduces the reader to the theoretical framework behind international relations, covering worldviews such as eco-wholism, realism and so on. More importantly, he directly, rather than obliquely, relates these worldviews to events actually taking place, striking a fine balance between theory and practice.

The book explores the possible successors to the nation state as the dominant means of global political organisation, for example regionalism and federalism. He succeeds in applying concepts borrowed from other disciplines to international studies, such as game theory with regard to crisis management and the economic concept of common property resources with regard to the protection and destruction of the global environment. Needless to say, it also deals with the WTO, UN and its organs (for eg the International Court of Justice), Multinational Corporations and other increasingly important international actors.

Hughes backs up excellent content and logic with a lucid writing style that does not use jargon without first explaining the terms. What I liked most about the book, however, was its organisation. A book with a scope this broad easily becomes haphazard and confusing. While avoiding the trap of divorcing what are really inter-related components of the world, Hughes divides his book neatly according to subject rather than in chronological order.

This book is very useful for students of Geography, World History and International Economics. A good book to arouse an interest in International Relations, and a good book if you already have such an interest.

A Critical Edition of the War of the Worlds: H.G. Well's Scientific Romance (Visions)
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (July, 1993)
Authors: H. G. Wells, David Y. Hughes, and Harry M. Geduld
Average review score:

Critical edition is a must for Wells students
War of the Worlds is one of the most important science fiction novels, but its importance can be difficult to see without some knowledge of the time in which it was written. Using essays (some by Wells himself) and copious footnotes, this critical edition does a fine job of placing War of the Worlds into its proper context

Fictional "Yes" Accurate " all the way"
This story kept me going through the evening into the next morning. The book is a masterful work of story line and true to life events. The only way I can explain this book is, it is exactly like the new "Titanic" Movie!! It encompesses a fictional story with true to life events. A must read for liner buffs and W.W.2 vets!! * I am a liner buff-I collect big and small items, contact me.

Developmental Mathematics
Published in Paperback by Brooks Cole (29 December, 1994)
Authors: C. L. Johnston, Gale M. Hughes, and Alden Willis
Average review score:

The best basic review book I've used.
I've used this text book to hone and review my basic math skills. It happened to also be a good review and reference book for the GMAT exam if you have the extra time to study.
If you do all of the section excercise problems you can really become good at all of the individual topics.
It's also a good book if you're weak at certain basic math skills such as decimal conversion to fractions, square roots, reducing fractions, exponents and radicals, polynomials, solving quadtratic equations by factoring and other basics.

Devotions for Ministry Wives
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 July, 2002)
Authors: Barbara Hughes and Jill Briscoe
Average review score:

Not just for ministry wives!
I am one of the contributors to this book and could hardly wait for the book's release to read what the other women had written. I have been encouraged and helped by them.

Even in a hectic season or life, the 2-page devotionals are accessible and good for any woman who wants to deepen her faith.

I recommend the book especially to ministry women who have been put off by the negative angle that many books have toward our calling, that see our lives mainly from the perspective of difficulties that come our way. The writers of DEVOTIONS FOR MINSTRY WIVES don't gloss over problems, but their outlook is definitely that they are glad to be where God has placed them.

If no one has given this book to you yet, buy it for yourself!

Dialogues With a Shaman Teacher: Into the Silence
Published in Paperback by Higher Consciousness Books (September, 1996)
Authors: Heather Hughes-Calero, Winged Wolf, and Winged Wolf
Average review score:

A Great Beginning
A refreshing book that is a fast read for those of us who get "STUCK" spiritually every now and then. When you read this, it is as if you are sitting in on the class giving by the spiritual teacher. I liked that you don't have to read this book cover to cover to get something out of it. You can jump around and find something that will help you or a friend "get it". I like to refer to it regularly for balance.
It is a must read for those of you who are on a search for knowlege and a positive outlook. I gave this book to several friends, they all enjoyed it and felt that it had helped them move forward spiritually. I call it the "Green Bible". It is a great start for a spiritual quest.
